Should vs. Is
The only place I should be right now is bed. I never had allergies in Chicago or Durham, but Atlanta has special foliage. For about a week every spring and fall, I feel like I might die. The first time, I thought I would. The only advantage this has over the flu is that my misery is not contagious. I should be resting, trying to feel better before a gig on Sunday and not making things worse...

Would anyone like to be my thrifting pen pal?
thedevilswife:
We tell each other what our styles are and then we go out and shop in our local thrift shops for each other then send them! Its not my original idea but i thought it would be really interesting. :)
If I was less broke, I would take you up on that. What a great idea!

Andy
Andy, the Black Sheep Ensemble’s other sousaphone, is a fast learner. I was too busy with the rehearsal and cramming for a test to post last night. Over the last couple of months, he has started taking control of the tempo, improvising, following things I do that are nowhere on the page. I heard him tweak a bass line to his liking last night. I admire anyone who picks up an instrument...

TAL9000: So I'm now entirely convinced →
tal9000:
that the term “self-advocacy”, referring to political action, has served its purpose and should be set aside. Kassianne and Amanda have both pointed out problems with it, but above all, it’s not even accurate. I’m not in this for me, I’m in this for the rest of us. If we were really all…

We Survived By The Skin Of Our Teeth: My sister... →
theskinofourteeth:
My sister has been getting a crash course in ableism this year. It makes her angry and cruel in a way I’m not used to seeing, and she’s no-one’s angel. I’m just not used to her snarling at people in public, staring them down as they sneer at my hands. I don’t even notice the stares half the time….

Good Thing
courtneykiara:
At lunch, I was extremely stressed out - I had been working on homework for my class the next period at the table by the tree, and I was tuned out of most conversation going on around me (although I was talking to Nissa because she is hilarious).Toward the end of lunch, I heard something going on to my right, and I looked down and there was a large group of boys making fun of...

Conversation overheard at Gamestop
Mom: It's rated M, I just wanted to see how bad the sex is in the game.
Cashier: Well it's one of the more violent games out right now. Like chainsawing people in half and watching them get ripped apart on screen.
Mom: But no sex, right? No kissing or anything? Any language?
Cashier: No, no sex, and the language isn't anything worse than the s-word.
Mom: Okay, because it's for my five year old so I just wanted to make sure. That's fine then.
I DO NOT FUCKING UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE THINK IS APPROPRIATE IN THIS COUNTRY. Chainsawing people in half is fucking fine, but God forbid he should hear a dirty word or see people kiss.
I really need to understand the logic behind "Watch all the death, but no depictions of love allowed."
I agree. The idea that violence is better for kids than sex is bizarre.

Busking In Atlanta
Someone asked me for advice about whether and how she should busk. This is what I said:
You should never be stopped in Atlanta as long as you stay on public property. The letter of the law is that your instrument must be acoustic, but I have seen people play electric instruments with small amps. Playing on the streets of Decatur is illegal but sometimes possible.
You could get a permit for...

Chasing Dreams & Drinks: Followers, Stop & Read. →
aim4themoon:
Dear Followers, Noah is a fully-functional autistic student at my school. He was very excited to run for the presidential spot on student council, until today he was denied a chance due to his “inability to handle” the responsibilities that apply. Noah is a great student, who makes high notes and…

Parents (Response to Stuart Duncan)
http://www.stuartduncan.name/autism/who-has-a-right-to-talk-about-autism/
I trust your intentions. You parents love your children. I do, too. When something bad happens to one of them, it means days without a good night’s sleep for me as it must for you. I am desensitized to human suffering. I grew up in hard places. What still hits me like a blow are stories of a kid like the one...

First Time
“I don’t think you’re ready for this, but you’re eighteen years old. It’s your car. I said it was, so I won’t stop you,” said Dad. With that, I slid into the driver’s seat, crumpled Google directions in hand, and pulled out. I had never driven any significant distance alone before. I was heading out onto highways with an old car, an address, a...

So You're Telling Me You Don't Have Autism
akanekoso:
So you’re telling me you don’t have autism? Seriously? Oh wow. Oh God. You are really neurotypical? Gosh, I’m so sorry. Are you sure, though? Because you look completely normal to me. I mean you are the last person I would have suspected of not being autistic.

A Day in the Life
I went over my schedule before breakfast. Class is from 3:30 to 6:25. I need to work on my outfit for the board meeting this Saturday, write a two to three page paper for Afro-Caribbean Migrations by Thursday, and make a Black Sheep Ensemble rehearsal at eight. It will probably run until ten or so. Then, I can shower, read another fifty pages, take a walk, listen to music or a podcast, and go...

It's a proven fact that the flute uses more air...
dreamsofawaywardinsomniac:
Nobody ever believes this, but it’s true. How, you may ask? Most of the air that all other instruments blow (including tuba) goes directly into their instrument. Unlike every other instrument, flutes don’t blow into our instrument. We blow ACROSS the mouth piece. So what does this mean? That most of the air we blow doesn’t even go in and produce sounds, so we have to...

Friday
I should be working. I could be another eighty pages ahead on my reading, but I spent the available time procrastinating online. This week has been so exhausting. How is it only two weeks in?

Autism Parents Group
Brought them together, you say?
This is normal.
I swear conspiracies
Must be lighter than air.
The blimp floats off,
Rudder on earth,
Towing paper kite bogeymen.
It sounds familiar, yes?
Build altars on windswept bluffs
To gods you think may care
For shielding wide-eyed starling sons
And fey, light-footed daughters
From shadowed vials, outlaw injections.
You called too late,
But let...
