Thoughts on taking autism back below the read more. They’re kind of disorganized, working from what I know about Autism$peaks, what I know about generating internet attention, & random things that have been filtering through my head.
I’ll probably be filing any thoughts I have under “Let’s start a social media crisis...

PLEASE REBLOG IF YOU CAN.
No joke. Its getting horrific…started with the High Park Fire, then a couple days ago the Waldo Canyon Fire flared up, and today, thanks to lightning and pine beetle kill, three new fires sparked in Boulder. And these are just the really bad ones along along the front range.
My friends have been evacuated from their home in Woodland Park,...

Start A Conversation
diversityourstrength:
Autism Speaks has done their best to make autism into a faceless monster. They’ve done all they can to dehumanize us, and the best course of action is to prove them wrong. Show the people who you are, dispel the lies, and start a dialogue. Eventually they will not be able to ignore the voices they have tried to silence. Be yourself, don’t let them change you. Do what you do...

Safe Spaces
Diversity is healthy, but people sometimes need others like themselves. This is especially true of minorities whose members have common problems. Such settings generate advice and mutual support that is beneficial to those who use them. Outsiders are sometimes invited to listen and learn. Their voices should never predominate. This is not a complex concept. People with similar struggles have...

Writing this in a rush because I’m trying to get myself fed and watered before work, but this is really important and the deadline for public comment is Monday so if you could reblog it around and write in if you have experience/knowledge with these issues, it would be pretty helpful to disabled people who are on Medicaid.

Some of you may have heard of Dirty Signs with Kristin. A youtube channel where a hearing person (who seems to have never studied ASL) is showing how to sign dirty phrases in ASL. However, it’s not even grammatically correct, some of the vocabulary is wrong, and some of the phrases are completely sexist & racist. She just announced that she has gotten signed to publish a book. agirlincollege:
On January 27, 2011 at a bar in Statesboro, GA I was called a nigger and had alcohol poured on my head. A complete stranger said, “Oh look, there goes another nigger.” and then minutes later there was alcohol on my head, down my shirt, my back. I did the right thing: I walked away. I refused to become who and what that stranger wanted me to be. When I turned around, I didn’t see...

Momentum
Once, if, EWA is gone, what should we do? I spent the weekend contemplating momentum. There are more possibilities than guarding a narrow stretch of Internet. Every time the tags explode, I see potential that often goes unharnessed. What would it take to rally part of this group around a plan?

Five years ago tonight, my mother handed a mysterious stranger a stack of hundred dollar bills. We may or may not have ever known his surname. It got me the long-vanished bill of sale for what was already loaded in a waiting car. Little in the intervening period went according to plan. Nothing I expected then to be doing now happened. I still love that tuba. Something worked.

Does anyone have any advice for someone (hint: me) trying to find a good way to find out if they have Asperger’s?
My mom has a friend who teaches autistic preschoolers, and she suggested finding a neurologist through Autism Speaks, but I know there are… problems… with that organization. If I have Asperger’s, I don’t really want to “treat” it. I just want to know if I have...

It Won
I tried to sit in with a Celtic and old time group at a local bar. Their leader invited me when he saw me playing on the street. I was doing something outlandish with sixteenth note that would register above the bass clef staff if they would submit to the printed page. I looked competent. It sounded like it would be fun.
When I arrived, I found no sheet music, no chord charts for many songs,...

Labeling is not for everyone. Some people who end up diagnosed HFA/Asperger’s are probably better off without help. I would have been. Nothing anyone could do for me outweighed the harm stigma and prejudice did. There are some therapies that might help. Much of it would be directed at making him more ‘normal.’ I do not know enough...

Anonymous asked: I saw your reblog asking if their friend had Asperger's. I would never post on my Tumblr like that, but as you said stop diagnosing people I'm worried I've been a bad friend as I've discussed with a couple of people whether my friend may have it. Is that really bad? I don't make a habit of it, I've just been curious as at times I struggle to understand her & felt...

I hope he doesn’t mind me asking the internet lol, I’m just super curious. Normally he’s just mildly OCD and nervous, but today he said he woke up and his mind was constantly racing. He was in a good mood, but acting a bit different than normal when we had lunch together. I feel bad posting this because I think he was self conscious about it, but I just think it’s interesting. And I found a page labelled “Allism Speaks” (similar to Autism Speaks, which apparently a really horrible organization, but that is not relevant at this time) which had the tagline “Exploring a world where autism is the norm and allism is a stigmatized disorder”.

Some very interesting preliminary information.
Her views on autism may not yet be clear, but her general politics are, and it’s one more reason not to support Autism Speaks.

TW: Ableism
I just read this. Basically the whole article is about how autistic ‘children’ burden everyone’s lives and how it would be better if many of our lives had been, ”a life unlived,” (don’t you just love how they sweeten it up instead of saying that things would be better if we were never born?).
It is disgusting. That is apparently the British equivalent of FOX,...

Why Passing Isn't Always a Privilege
getin2myhead21:
Privilege. Having some aspect of a mainstream societally accepted group. We hear about it all the time, especially in the disability community. In the most simplest of explanations for the context of this post- it means that even though you have a disability you can pass as not having a disability or “like most of society” “typical” or as much as the term makes me gag for...

How Autism Charities Can Help
This was for a collaboration that fell through. I thought it should see daylight. Here it is:
Invest in the present. Whether or not a cure is one’s goal, recognize need here and now. Keep the use of resources balanced. Spend at least half of the operations budget on practical measures likely to improve autistic people’s lives within the decade.
Help the public schools. Poor...
