How did you start playing tuba?
Since I have Asperger’s, I was considered delicate, not raised for strenuous, competitive, stressful things. Fortunately, a band director was too “ignorant” to realize autistics are hopeless cases. She saw in me a bright, anxious child, eager to learn, willing to work hard, not a tragedy. After failures on other instruments, she decided to try me on tuba.

What do you play?
My workhorses:
- Aria, a nineteen-year-old BBb Miraphone 186-4U
- Sally, a small, BBb, silver-plated sousaphone in her early sixties made by Holton under the Collegiate brand
Also:
- Necromancer, a small, Italian tuba or large euphonium over 150 years old
- George, a collapsible, five-foot, bugle-like instrument from the Himalayas
